All About Halloween and Baskets

by Justine Green

Did you know that Halloween is one of the world’s oldest holidays?  Halloween got its name from  “All Hollow’s Eve” which was the night before the Catholic “All Hollow’s Day” or “All Hallowed Souls Day” meant to honor the saints.  Over time, the traditions have changed and many countries celebrate this holiday each in their own unique ways and with different meanings. It was originally a Celtic festival called Samhain (pronounced sow-in), that  marked the end of the harvest and the beginning of the new year (November 1st).

The tradition of trick-or-treating dates to All Souls’ Days parades in England. Poor people went door-to-door praying for souls of the dead and the villagers gave “soul cakes” in return. In the U.S. in the 1920’s, kids began going trick-or-treating in their neighborhoods. By this time, Halloween lost most of its religious meaning and became a holiday where people donned costumes and became, for one night, a monster, superhero,  princess and anything in between and walked around the neighbor hood, trick or treating, performing a trick if no candy is given. Of course there is no trick to be performed, just an expression used to ask for treats while dressed up. Not only do children collect goodies, people of all ages put on celebrations and parties.

From costumes to home décor and let’s not forget the treats, Halloween has become the holiday that calls for loads of creepy creativity and frightful fun.  For some, the more gory and ghoulish the theme, the better!  Whether your theme this year is more modest and conventional or if you are taking it to the scary extreme, Lucky Clover Trading has a wide range of outstanding selections to choose from.

Think back to your childhood memories, what was one the best parts of Halloween?  Along with the costumes, the treats and goodies, a Halloween gift basket is a sure way to win over the little ghouls and ghosts alike!  Our oblong wood chip trays are excellent for gift baskets and can also be reused for your Halloween décor and even as trays to serve your treats.  These trays come in different colors such as olive green or rustic gray, perfect for a Frankenstein or monster theme and are available in different sizes to meet your needs.

For a cryptic spooky feel, try a wood chip swing handle basket.  Its dark stain gives it a dark, forest like feel that is perfect for potions and ghoulish goodies of all sorts. It can also double as a prop to hold for your treats during your door-to-door fun.

Maybe you want to create one for the adult that’s still a kid-at-heart, take a look at our antique tin containers.  These extravagant tin containers have beautiful stains and raised patterns, age appropriate for Dracula or the Zombie Bride you’re expecting over for your ghostly festivities.

For those of us who like to stick to a more modest and less scary theme we have quality baskets available in our classic orange and black as well.  Your little trick or treaters would love one of our tin orange and black Mini Round Halloween buckets.  Grab a bunch and get the kids involved to make treat-filled tins for their entire class!  If for whatever reason, you are deciding against door-to-door fun this year, create a more elaborate gift basket for your gloomy goblin and grab one of our large wood chip trays in orange or green and fill it with props, goodies, and games for a fun filled evening. Our colored in Orange and Black puts the finishing touch on your beautiful custom-made Halloween baskets.
